Marcus Aurelius said, “Not to assume it’s impossible because you find it hard. But to recognize that if it’s humanly possible, you can do it too.” And Seneca said; If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable.”

The question I want to pose to you today is simple: What are you led by in life?

  • Are you led by your fears?
Are you led by the opinions of others?
Are you led by the need to fit in?
Are you led by a situation that seems impossible?
Is life just happening, and are you just going along with it?

Are you led by core values and principles you believe in? Do you have a grand vision that is shaping the decisions you make about your life?

The stoics will advise you to contemplate your own death. I know this is one topic we all like to avoid. Living is good, death is bad. That is what we have been taught to believe. However, death is one thing we are all destined to experience one day. It is the number one certainty in life. It is also a journey you go on, on your own. No one can go with you. And when that journey comes near, and you look back at your life, what would you want that life to have looked like? What is the one thing that will make you take your last breath peacefully? What is the one thing that would have made it all worth it? This thing, this vision, is what should be guiding your life.

Because when that day comes, what the world thought of you will not matter. Whoever or whatever stood in your way will not matter. The only thing you will be left with is you and your conscience. There will be no one to blame, you would have done yourself the greatest disservice if you allowed yourself to be guided by anything else other than the clear vision that you had for your life.
