The Five Seconds rule. Count to 5 and begin doing.

Understand this principle. What exists in your mind is not the objective truth. It is what you believe to be true based on your social conditioning. The thoughts in your mind are simply perceptions you  form based on the things you expose our mind to. Your mind is simply a tool which has been given to you to navigate the world. It is not who you are. At any moment, research shows that you have five seconds to disobey the demands of the mind and listen to demands of your true self–your soul.

The deeper I get into my mindfulness practice, the more I come to understand the mind as the enemy.

It is within the mind that self-doubt, insecurities, jealousy, envy, and procrastination exists. And when your spirit inspires you to undertake a certain action, it is the mind that gives you a thousand and one reasons why you shouldn’t. The many indignities that we all experience daily are inspired by our minds. And the unfortunate reality is that from a very young age, we are all trained to live by our minds. The mind dictates, and we obediently follow. However, what exists in our minds isn’t the objective truth. It is what we have come to believe to be true based on what we have exposed our minds to. You will have different sets of “truths” should you expose your mind to different experiences than you have, your whole life.

Our mind is simply a tool we are  given to navigate the world. It is not who we are.

I have come to understand the mind as a tool that operates just like any physical machinery we use. Think of the mind as a computer or any smart device. It spits out information based on what we feed into it. And it works perfectly for our benefit when the right information is imputed. What exists in our mind isn’t really who we are. You need the mind to store information  to remember how to eat, walk, talk, learn, etc. Our mind is needed to  function as a human being and partake in a civil society. The mind is a tool, and who you are is the one behind that tool. For example, I am typing this article on a computer. I am not the computer. Your mind is like the computer and who you are is the one behind the computer. Who you are is behind your mind—it is your soul! It is the infinite energy that will continue to exist even after you leave your body—even after you leave your mind.

And a lot of us do not live from our soul, we live from that computer alone. We feed garbage into that computer, and it spits out equally garbage information that informs our perception of our life and the world around us.

Our soul constantly speaks to us, and when we quiet the chatter that exists in the computer, we are able to listen.

It speaks to us through our intuitions. And through little nudges here and there. When we sit down with ourselves in silence, it is the still, but small voice that beams with truth. Our soul operates differently from our minds. It is not influenced by the same outwardly information that our minds are influenced by. Our soul operates from a different from of intelligence than that of our minds. It is inspired by an intelligence that is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all present. The soul knows what is best for us, and wants what is best for us.

So when your soul speaks, you listen. You count to five seconds and you act before your mind convinces you to do otherwise. Because research has shown that it takes about five seconds for our minds to convince us otherwise. This  five seconds rule is what Mel Robbin’s internationally best-selling book The 5 seconds rule is based on.
