THE FEAR BOOK BY CHERI HUBER

There has been a lot of books written on fear. But by favorite for far is The Fear Book by Cheri Huber. Cheri Huber offers a very simplified explanation on the psychology of fear as well as practical steps in taking control of outlives instead of allowing the fear we feel to dictate our lives.

Fear in its essence is meant to be a protective signal. Our minds have gathered a lot of data from the experiences we have had and the information we have fed it. When we encounter a particular situation, our minds look through that data and predict a possible outcome for us. When it finds a possibly dangerous outcome, it communicates it to us in the form of fear. This fear is a prediction. It is not a certainty. It is about a future event. It is not happening in the present. And it may never happen at all.

Fear acts as a protective signal for us. And we obey its wisdom even when it wrong. As the author beautifully puts it:

“When this force in you that has controlled and motivated you all of your life is screaming ‘ if you do that you’re going to die!’  very few people are going to say, ‘ well, I  just need to find out of this is so.’”

The author argues that fear does not protect us. Instead fear protects itself. If we dare to do the things that our fears instruct us not to do, we are not the once who will die. It is fear rather, that will die. According to this book, fear is the feeling of separateness. That is the movement away from center. Fear is the feeling that we are separate from the source of our being.

This book has a spiritual take on fear. It dives deeper into the nature of fear and how you can learn to overcome your fears by being present with it and learning to heal it from the inside out.
